FriENDship: Charlotte, continued

A FEW DAYS LATER, I get home from school and there’s another letter in our mailbox from Charlotte. My heart jumps a little when I see it. She writes back so fast!

Dear Eleni,

So sorry about the thing with Sylvie! That sounds really terrible. I had a similar thing happen last year. This girl Ainsley who always sat in front of me was kind of like my best friend in school even though we didn’t hang a ton outside of school and then one day she just became best friends with this other girl Kyla because they were both obsessed with Dance Moms. It was really weird and I’m still kind of confused about it.

Is it so funny we’re still writing letters when we could be texting or even calling or FaceTiming? Hee hee. But I love seeing all of your amazing stationery. I am so excited for Halloween. My neighbor who’s like sixty but doesn’t have kids is making a haunted house for all the kids in the neighborhood. She’s so cool and doesn’t seem old. I’ll try to send you pictures. That overnight sounds really fun and I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time but I get that it’s hard to imagine without your BFF. Of course it is!

Thanks for being so speedy with replying to my letters!

XOXOXOXO Charlotte

I put her letter in my top desk drawer and promise myself that I’ll write back to her later today.

I go downstairs, grab an apple from the fridge, scoop Pontoon up and head out to the porch.

I need to call Adelaide so I can tell her how fired up I’m feeling. The Charlotte letters, the rabbi’s sermon, getting ready to talk to Brenna again, even speaking up at the committee meeting with Sylvie—I feel more secure with this mission now. I’m making progress, and I want to tell her face-to-face, even if it is through a screen.

“Hey!” I say, sounding cheerier than I’ve felt in a while.

“Hey,” she grumbles; all I can see is her chin.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Pearl Mosley accused me of cheating off her for the math test, which is literally the dumbest since she’s not smart at all and I would def never cheat off her, but whatever. My parents had to come in for a meeting and now I’m in trouble. AGAIN.”

“But you didn’t do anything,” I remind her, as if I know the whole story, which I clearly don’t. There’s music playing in the background and it’s a little hard to hear her.

“Yeah, but it doesn’t matter. I’ve been caught cheating before, so I guess once a cheater, always a cheater, who even knows.” She pauses and rubs her eye and if I didn’t know Adelaide better I would think she’s crying, but she’s definitely not a crier.

“I’m sorry, Adelaide. Is there any way to prove it?” I deflate a little, wondering if I should hold off on talking about the mission right now.

“I don’t know. Maybe. They’re going over the tests side by
